Bhagavad Gita Chapter Two: Notes

The Bhagawan begins His discourse in II:2. II:6 Arjuna in a fix between what's right and what's wrong. He is a cloud, suspended between the sky and the sea. II:7 Arjuna does the best; Surrenders himself to Bhagawan. The Great Lecture starts in II:11. II:12 is a great sloka: na tv evaham jatu nasam na tvam neme janadhipah na caiva na bhavisyamah sarve vayam atah param First mention of the 'soul' in II:13. dehino 'smin yatha dehe kaumaram yauvanam jara tatha dehantara-praptir dhiras tatra na muhyati Important Note: The soul is mentioned as 'that', not called as 'aatma' so far. II:14, some important concepts: Sense Perception ( माथ्रास्पर्शाह ) , Tolerance ( तितिक्शः ) II:15 speaks about 'Eligibility for Liberation' ( अमृत त्वाय ) II: 16 Word to Word Meaning: Never of the non-existent there is endurance; Nchanging quality there is of the eternal; Of the two, verily observed conclusion in deed of them, of the truth, by the seers. nasato vidyate ...

Bhagavad Gita Chapter One: Notes

Below are some of my notes I found recently, which I wrote down some years back, attempting to study the Geeta. Here are the notes for Chapter One: Observation of the Armies on the Battlefield of Kurukshetra Kurukshetra is described as a piligrimage. They call it the Dharmakshetra, the place where the Dharma will prevail. Diplomacy of Duryodhana has been lauded. First sloka to name the Bhagawan Krishna is 14th. (I:14). The name used here is "Madhava". Mention of Hanuman in I:20. Importance of Hanuman is signified rightly, i.e., Hanuman is a symbol of victory, as Rama was served by him during the crisis in Ramayana (as told by Valmiki). Arjuna's Plight explained in I:29 and I:30 Arjuna's doubt about the 'purpose of war', is similar to my doubt about the 'purpose of my life', which seems like a war, a battle every day. (I:33, 34, 35) I:36 speaks about Fear of acquiring 'sin'. Very appropriate to everyone now. I:37 shows Ignorance. Question "...

A Disappointing Trip - Chennai

Unlike the last time when I went for my H1-B stamping, this time around, going for H1-X stamping was via a train journey. I was glad that it was not in a plane, where even though the time it takes is much much less, the trouble in commuting to and from the airports, sitting with legs twisted in the economy class of the planes, I reckon I could avoid in a train journey, happily sleeping in the night while on the move. The other advantage was not to spend a forlorn night in a hotel, which I always hated. Satisfied with this and also the fact that a lot of cost to the company could be saved, I embarked on this trip. Catching the Chennai Express on the 06th January, I was looking forward to a special sojourn in Chennai the next day, once I complete the formal interview at the US Consulate. Earlier in the day, I heard from a senior colleague about a Lord Jagannath temple in the outskirts of Chennai, which was a miniature model of the original temple in Orissa's Puri. I resol...

This is a poem from Pothana's Bhagavatham again: In this, the context is Lord Krishna, lifting the Govardhana Mountain, during a big storm in the town. He protects all the people and cattle in the village by creating an umbrella with a huge mountain!! The meaning of this is: "The Lord Hari (one of the names of Krishna), who in His previous avatara as the Hog, (Varahavatara, 3rd in the Dasavatara's), carried the Earth, (presently also), with an equal ease of an Elephant lifting up a lotus bud, in the form of the Master and Lord of the three worlds, lifted up the Govardhana Mountain, easily and skillfully with a single hand! " Lovely poem....

Context: This is a poem in the “ashtama skandam” of the Pothana’s Bhagavatham, where in the story of the Maha Vishnu in His “Vamana” avatara is told. Vamana goes to the great demon king Bali and asks him for three feet of space, as Bali is doing a great penance and is giving alms/charity to those who seek. Then, the intelligent guru of Bali, Shukracharya, warns Bali not to promise anything to this young Brahmin Vamana, as “He is none other than the great Vishnu, and He will destroy you if you give Him whatever He asks”. In reply, Bali, who is known for his great charitable nature, say...

Vibhuthiyoga: (Bhagavad Gita Chapter 10) Part-1

Harihi Om!! In the 10th Chapter of Bhagavad Gita, Krishna speaks to Arjuna about how He, as various forms in various beings or objects is spread everywhere and is the origin of every being living or non-living. As I understand, the nature of Vishnu, being all-pervasive and the basic essence of everything, is being explained with extensive examples in this chapter. (I refer to the copy of SriBhagavadgita, (Sanskrit/Telugu) published by Gita Press, Gorakhpur for most of the meaning of the Sanskrit slokas in Telugu) This seems to be in line with my notes I wrote based on my understanding of Chapter 7 on this blog. ( http://freedomformind.blogspot.com/2007/12/notes-from-bhagavad-gita-chapter-7.html ) The 10th Chapter is also termed the “Vibuthiyoga”. Vibuthi may mean the “superhuman powers or faculties”. Sometimes in context of the Vibuthi powers, according to the yogic literature, are eight fold powers: Anima (ability to become small “minute”), Mahima (ability to grow huge, like the Vira...

Notes from Bhagavad Gita Chapter 7

I was just reading through the Chapter 7 of Bhagavad Gita , on Gyana Vigyana Yoga (published by Gita Press, Gorakhpur in Telugu). These are a few notes and observations I made based on my attempts to understand it. In slokas 4 and 5, Lord Krishna describes Arjuna about various natures and attributes of Himself. "My nature is of the eight forms: Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Sky, Mind (manas), Intellect (buddhi), Ego (ahankAra). This eight-formed nature of Mine is called "aparA" or "jadA". Besides this, I have another nature, encompassing and pervading the entire Universe, called "parA" or "chethanA", which is My personification in living form. " Continuing in sloka 6: "O Arjuna! All living beings of the this world, are evolved from these natures of Mine. I am the cause for the birth of this Universe and its annihilation. That is to say, I am the origin and primary cause of the existence of the entire Universe." I found it very inte...
